I liv e in earthquake country, astride the Hayward fault, itself connected to t he gigantic San Andreas fault. I have often thought of the Golden Gate Brid ge in San Francisco as our city's boldest structure in that its great south pier rests directly upon the fault one of the San Andreas.
That bridge is an amazing structure of both flexibility and strength,. It is built to sway some twenty feet at the center of its one-mile suspension span. The se cret to its durability is its flexibility, which enables this sway.
