On this date in 1969, the world watched on TV as astronau ts Neil Armstrong and Ed Aldrin landed on the moon. Six hours later, both men were walking on its powder-like surface. Later, Aldrin said of the sci entific feat of landing someone on the moon:
"It was more than a tea m of people and government and industry working together... It is my hope t hat people will keep this whole event in their minds and see beyond the min or details and technical achievements to the deeper meaning behind it all: a challenge, a quest, the human need to recognize that we are all one man kind under God." ~ LIFE
