The first century martyrs, Sain ts Nereus and Achilleus, were Roman soldiers and members of the elite Prae torinan Guard, entrusted with the responsibility of defending the Roman Em peror and persecuting Christians. Upon their dramatic conversion to Christi anity, they were arrested, taken to the island of Terracina, and martyre d. Aside from this, nothing else is known about them. Their unexpected con versions are a vivid reminder of the power of the Gospel and of divine grac e. No matter how bleak a situation may appear, God is able to bring about amazing changes in fortune, validating Jesus' promise that the gates of he ll shall not prevail against the Church (Matthew 16:18).
