"Love the LORD your God; follow Him faithfully; keep His c ommandments; remain loyal to Him; and serve Him with all your heart and a ll your soul." ~ Joshua 22:5
The New Testament makes no mention of the Virgin Mary's parents by name, but a second century apocryphal writ ing, the Protoevangelium of James, gives an account of Mary' s birth, and is the source of the names of Joachim and Anne. Though the ac curacy of this tradition can be questioned, Mary's parents must have been God-fearing persons who provided an atmosphere which nourished Our Lady's p erfect love and humility. Joachim and Anne are the patron saints of grandpa rents. Though they never met their grandson Jesus while on earth, they pla yed an important, behind-the-scene role in preparing for the coming of His Kingdom. Joachim and Anne show us sainthood does not require fame o r recognition. Though they remain virtually unknown even today, they helpe d prepare for Christ's coming simply by fulfilling t...

"It is God's will that by doing right you should silence the ignorance of the foolish. As servants of God, live as free people, yet d o not use your freedom as a pretext for evil. Honor everyone. Love the fami ly of believers." ~ 1 Peter 2:15-17
We can remember that in spir itual matters. we are only instruments. It is not ours to decide how or whe n we are to act. God plans all spiritual matters. It is up to us to make ou rselves fit to do God's work. All that hinders our spiritual activity can b e eliminated. We can depend on God for all the strength we need to overcome those faults which are blocks. We can keep ourselves fit, so that God can use us as a channels for God' spirit. ~ Fr. Pat Umberger
Pray that our selfishness may not hinder our progress in spiritual matters. Pray that we may be a good instrument for God to work with.

"The one who is righteous by faith shall live." ~ Romans 1:17
A.J. Cronin began his professional career as a physician. Late r he turned to writing. In Adventures in Two Worlds, he says that as a medical student he felt "superior" to those gullible, uneducated folks who still clung to "outworn myths.".He could only "smile" at their f aith in the existence of God and the human soul. Then he added:
"But when, as a qualified doctor, I went out into the world, to the mining v alleys in South Wales and... assisted at the miracle of birth (and) sat wit h the dying in the still hours of the night... I lost my superiority, and this, though I was not then aware of it, is the first step toward finding God." ~ Mark Link, S.J.
Why would this be the first step toward fi nding God? To what extent might it apply to your life?
"I sought my soul - but my soul I could not see. I sought my God - but my G od eluded me. I sought my brother - and I f...

"He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does t he LORD require of you but to do justice and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God? " ~ Micah 6:8
Simplicity is the keynote o f a good life. We can choose the simple things always. Life can become comp licated if we let it be so. We can be swamped by difficulties if we let the m take up too much of our time. Every difficulty can be either solved or ig nored and something better substituted for it. We can love the humble thing s of life. We can reverence the simple things. Our standard need never be t he world's standard wealth and power. ~ Fr. Pat Umberger
Pray that w e may love the simple things of life. Pray that we may keep my life uncompl icated and free.

The leg of Ignatius took nine months to heal and left him with a lifelong limp. While recuperating, he occupied his time daydreaming and fantasizing. He called for romances and b ooks of chivalry, but the only two books to be found in the house were a l ife of Christ and a collections of saints' lives. Slowly, Ignatius conceiv ed an admiration for what he found there. He still dreamed of glory, but n ow it was to be God's glory. He still fashioned serving a king... but the k ing was no longer a earthly one. ~ Thomas Clancy, adapted from Ignatius Loyola: A Soldier-Saint

"Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them slip from your hea rt as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children a fter them." ~ Deuteronomy 4:9
The most compelling question that every Christian man must ask is this: What am I doing today that will be an influence for Jesus Christ in the next generation? We cannot hold onto the world, we can only hand it to others. It's as if you are a father with yo ur arms wrapped around your young son's shoulders, helping him get the fee l of the bat. Swing and miss. Swing and connect. There is no glory in that moment - only hints of glory as a pattern is established. It may be years b efore your boy can swing for the fence. Someday, though, he will stand at the plate where the balls are hard and fast. It's a game where they call r eal strikes, and some men strike out. When your son hits that home run in the game that counts, you may not be around to...
