"For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to d o good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." ~ Ephesians 2:10
When was the last time you kissed a child's boo-boos? Have you ever listened to a friend as they complained about their job? When your wi fe has had a rough day, do you rub her back, buy her favorite ice cream, suggest a movie out together? Do you have a reputation for being someone w ho can be counted on when things go wrong? If you answered yes, congratula tions! You've been practicing a spiritual work of mercy. The work of mercy we practice by kissing cuts or bringing home peach swirl is "Comforting the afflicted." Sometimes we think we have to volunteer our summers in Ethiopi a to help the afflicted. But when we think of mercy that way, we are setti ng ourselves up to feel guilty because we're not Mother Teresa.
When you think about it, though, neither was Jesus. When he comforted the aff licted, he didn't take-off for India; he went d...

On this date in 1969, the world watched on TV as astronau ts Neil Armstrong and Ed Aldrin landed on the moon. Six hours later, both men were walking on its powder-like surface. Later, Aldrin said of the sci entific feat of landing someone on the moon:
"It was more than a tea m of people and government and industry working together... It is my hope t hat people will keep this whole event in their minds and see beyond the min or details and technical achievements to the deeper meaning behind it all: a challenge, a quest, the human need to recognize that we are all one man kind under God." ~ LIFE

Go to my brothers and tell them, 'I am going to my Father a nd your Father, to my God and your God.'" ~ John 20:17
The name Magedalene means "from Magdala," a village on the shores of the Sea of Ga lilee. Mary Magdalene is the woman out of whom Jesus drove seven demons (Ma rk 16:9, Luke 8:2). This Mary was present at the crucifixion of Jesus (Mar k 15:40). She was also present at his burial (Mark 15:47).
So me think she's the sinful woman who anointed Jesus' feet at Simon's house ( Luke 7:36-50). But this is only speculation. Likewise, some think she was the sister of Martha and Lazarus (John 11:1, 12:3). But again, this is on ly speculation. This much is certain. She is someone who loved Jesus deeply . In the final analysis this is all that matters. ~ J.M.Guerin

"But I do not count my life of any value to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesu s, to testify to the good news of God's grace." ~ Acts 20:24
We can have a singleness of purpose to do our part in God's work. We need not let material distractions interfere with our job of improving personal rel ationships. It is easy to become distracted by material affairs, so that w e lose our singleness of purpose. We do not have time to be concerned about the many concerns of the world. We can concentrate and specialize in what we can do best. ~ Fr. Pat Umberger
Pray that we may not become distr acted by material affairs. Pray that we may concentrate on doing what we ca n do best.

In hi s Journal of a Soul, Pope John XXIII describes an experience he had during a retreat in Turkey. He wrote:
"Every evening from the windo w... I see an assemblage of boats on the Bosporus; they come round from th e Golden Horn in tens and hundreds... a most impressive spectacle of color and lights. These lights glow all night and one can hear the cheerful voice s of the fishermen... The other night towards one o'clock, it was pouring with rain, but the fishermen were still there... What a vision of work, z eal, and labor... We must do as the fishermen of the Bosporus do." ~ Mark Link, S.J.

"Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me." ~ Mark 8:34
During the Vietnam War , Father Capodanno would listen to the confessions of young Marines. The wo rds of absolution, marked by the sign of the cross, were followed by reas surance that together they would see each other through this time of trial. Father Vincent would then present the young man with one of the hundreds o f Saint Christopher medals he made.
Legend says that Christopher, m eaning "Christ bearer," was a giant of a man who made his living carrying people across a river. One day, a small child asked him for a lift. When C hristopher placed him on his shoulders, he found the child was unbelievabl y heavy. When they finally reached the other side, Christopher was astound ed to discover that the child was Christ carrying the weight of the whole w orld. For Catholics, the story of Saint Christopher taught a double lesson of compassion for those who suffer and the reality o...
