"Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there a lso will my servant be. The Father will honor anyone who serves me." ~ John 12:26
The film, Chariots of Fire, is about Eric Liddel l, a Scott, and Britain''s top 100-meter runner and a cinch to win the go ld in the 1924 Paris Olympics. Deeply religious, Liddell never ran on Sund ay.
When the Olympic schedule was released, he was shocked. The 100-meter event was scheduled for Sunday. In spite of the incredible pr essure put upon him by the British press, Eric refused to compete. He swit ched to the 400-meter race, a race he had never run in his life.
Just before the race, an American runner, Jackson Scholz, handed Li ddell a note. It contained this sentence from John 12:26: "My Father will h onor anyone who serves me." Seconds later, Eric won the 400 meter-meter ev ent. Still clutched in his hand was the note Jackson Scholz had given him. ~ Mark Link, S.J.

"Do not love the world or the things in the world. The love of the Father is not in those who love the world; for all that is in the w orld - the desire of the flesh, the desire of the eyes, the pride in rich es - comes not from the Father but from the world. And the world and its de sire are passing away, bu those who do the will of God live forever." ~ i>1 John 2:15-17
Functioning on a material plane alone can take us a way from God. We can also try to function on a spiritual plane. Functioning on a spiritual plane as well as on a material plane can make life what it should be. All material activities are valueless in themselves alone. But a ll activities, seemingly trivial or of seemingly great moment, are all al ike if directed by God's guidance. We can try to obey God as we would expec t faithful, willing servants to carry out directions. ~ Fr. Pat Umberger Pray that the flow of God's spirit may come to us through many channe ls. "He who has ears, let him hear." ~ Matthew 11:15
Known as the "Lily of the Mohawks," the Native American Kateri Tekakwitha , was born near modern-day New York State. When Kateri was four, she was stricken with smallpox which left her with a pock-mocked face and partial b lindness. Kateri became skilled at decorating leather moccasins and clothin g, but her relatives treated her like a slave. When Jesuit missionaries vi sited here village, she was too shy to ask for religious instruction. One of the priests, noticing her piety, spoke to her about Jesus. Kateri was delighted, and she was later baptized. Because she thereafter refused to w ork on Sundays, her relatives accused her of laziness and disrespect, and treated here severely. This, and the harsh penances she practiced, serio usly affected her health, but she responded to every difficulty with love and patience as she grew in grace and virtue. Helped by other sympathetic I ndians, she escaped to a Catholic settlement near Montrea...

"Call upon me in the day of trouble; I will rescue you, an d you shall honor me." ~ Psalm 50:15
The only survivor of a ship wreck was washed up on a small uninhabited island. He prayed feverishly for God to rescue him, and every day he scanned the horizon for help, but no ne seemed forthcoming. Exhausted, he eventually managed to build a little hut out of driftwood to protect him from the elements, and to store his fe w possessions.
But then one day, after scavenging for food, he arr ived home to find his little hut in flames, the smoke rolling up to the sk y. The worst had happened; everything was lost. He was stunned with grief and anger. "God, how could you do this to me!" he cried. Early the next da y, however, he was awakened by the sound of a ship that was approaching t he island. It had come to rescue him. "How did you know I was here?" asked the weary man of his rescuers. They replied, "We saw your smoke signal." ~ Author unknown

"Do you not know that you are God's temple and that God's Sp irit dwells in you?" ~ 1 Corinthians 3:16
God' spirit is all aro und us all day long. We have no thoughts, no plans, no impulses, no emot ions that God does not know about. We can hide nothing from God. We need no t make your conduct conform only to that of the world and need not depend o n the approval or disapproval of others. God sees in secret, but rewards o penly. If we are in harmony with God, doing our best to live the way we be lieve God wants us to live, we can be at peace. ~ Fr. Pat Umberger

"Moses, however, said to the LORD, "If you please, LORD , I have never been eloquent, neither in the past, nor recently, nor now that you have spoken to your servant; but I am slow of speech and tongue. " ~ Exodus 4:10
Daniel Harrington is a biblical scholar. When as ked where he finds God, he said:
"I stutter... As a young boy I rea d in a newspaper that Moses stuttered. I looked it up in the Bible, and su re enough in Exodus 4:10, Moses says to God: '...I am slow of speech and s low of tongue.' "
But Harrington found much more that this. H e found the story of God's self-revelation to Moses and of God's commission ing of Moses to speak that self-revelation to the world. Harrington ended, "I found God in the Bible, and I have continued to do so ever since." The n he added this caution:
