A.J. Cronin began his professional career as a physician. Late r he turned to writing. In Adventures in Two Worlds, he says that as a medical student he felt "superior" to those gullible, uneducated folks who still clung to "outworn myths.".He could only "smile" at their f aith in the existence of God and the human soul. Then he added:

"But when, as a qualified doctor, I went out into the world, to the mining v alleys in South Wales and... assisted at the miracle of birth (and) sat wit h the dying in the still hours of the night... Simplicity is the keynote o f a good life. We can choose the simple things always. Life can become comp licated if we let it be so. We can be swamped by difficulties if we let the m take up too much of our time. Every difficulty can be either solved or ig nored and something better substituted for it. We can love the humble thing s of life. We can reverence the simple things. Our standard need never be t he world's standard wealth and power. ~ Fr. Pat Umberger

Pray that w e may love the simple things of life. Pray that we may keep my life uncompl icated and free.

The leg of Ignatius took nine months to heal and left him with a lifelong limp. While recuperating, he occupied his time daydreaming and fantasizing. The most compelling question that every Christian man must ask is this: What am I doing today that will be an influence for Jesus Christ in the next generation? We cannot hold onto the world, we can only hand it to others. It's as if you are a father with yo ur arms wrapped around your young son's shoulders, helping him get the fee l of the bat. Swing and miss. Swing and connect. There is no glory in that moment - only hints of glory as a pattern is established. It may be years b efore your boy can swing for the fence. Someday, though, he will stand at the plate where the balls are hard and fast. It's a game where they call r eal strikes, and some men strike out. No matter how hard a man works, no matter how much wealth and notoriety a man accumu lates, it is always a fair question to ask, What will I leave behind?< /i> What we leave behind is called legacy. It is more th an "Salesman of the Year" plaques. And certainly more than a wooden box pla nted six feet deep. It's the footprints we leave at a workplace or institut ion, and the fingerprints we leave in the lives we love. Deep in the soul of every man is the desire to leave behind a good name. A name that makes p eople nod in affirmation For a man to be able to look into the eyes of his wife and children and to be able to see them looking back with respect, ad miration, trust, loyalty - that is enough to make most of us hallucinate. That is a living legacy. And that is what every man should long for.
