Two youn g men were canoeing on a river in the Canadian wilds. One day they both bec ame ill. Fortunately, they spotted a trapper's cabin. They beached their c anoe and walked up to the cabin. It was unlocked. In one corner was a cot. On it lay an open Bible with a note. It read:

"Your cabin saved m y life. I was seriously ill and needed shelter. Your cabin provided it. I h ave no money with which to repay you. I can only promise you God's blessing . Read the passage from Matthew 25."

The name Magedalene means "from Magdala," a village on the shores of the Sea of Ga lilee. Mary Magdalene is the woman out of whom Jesus drove seven demons (Ma rk 16:9, Luke 8:2). This Mary was present at the crucifixion of Jesus (Mar k 15:40). She was also present at his burial (Mark 15:47).

So me think she's the sinful woman who anointed Jesus' feet at Simon's house ( Luke 7:36-50). But this is only speculation. Likewise, some think she was the sister of Martha and Lazarus (John 11:1, 12:3). But again, this is on ly speculation. This much is certain. She is someone who loved Jesus deeply . We can have a singleness of purpose to do our part in God's work. We need not let material distractions interfere with our job of improving personal rel ationships. It is easy to become distracted by material affairs, so that w e lose our singleness of purpose. We do not have time to be concerned about the many concerns of the world. We can concentrate and specialize in what we can do best. ~ Fr. Pat Umberger

In hi s Journal of a Soul, Pope John XXIII describes an experience he had during a retreat in Turkey. He wrote:

"Every evening from the windo w... I see an assemblage of boats on the Bosporus; they come round from th e Golden Horn in tens and hundreds... a most impressive spectacle of color and lights. These lights glow all night and one can hear the cheerful voice s of the fishermen... The other night towards one o'clock, it was pouring with rain, but the fishermen were still there... During the Vietnam War , Father Capodanno would listen to the confessions of young Marines. The wo rds of absolution, marked by the sign of the cross, were followed by reas surance that together they would see each other through this time of trial. Father Vincent would then present the young man with one of the hundreds o f Saint Christopher medals he made.

Legend says that Christopher, m eaning "Christ bearer," was a giant of a man who made his living carrying people across a river. One day, a small child asked him for a lift. The New Testament makes no mention of the Virgin Mary's parents by name, but a second century apocryphal writ ing, the Protoevangelium of James, gives an account of Mary' s birth, and is the source of the names of Joachim and Anne. Though the ac curacy of this tradition can be questioned, Mary's parents must have been God-fearing persons who provided an atmosphere which nourished Our Lady's p erfect love and humility.
