Known as the "Lily of the Mohawks," the Native American Kateri Tekakwitha , was born near modern-day New York State. When Kateri was four, she was stricken with smallpox which left her with a pock-mocked face and partial b lindness. Kateri became skilled at decorating leather moccasins and clothin g, but her relatives treated her like a slave. When Jesuit missionaries vi sited here village, she was too shy to ask for religious instruction. One of the priests, noticing her piety, spoke to her about Jesus. Kateri was delighted, and she was later baptized. Because she thereafter refused to w ork on Sundays, her relatives accused her of laziness and disrespect, and treated here severely. This, and the harsh penances she practiced, serio usly affected her health, but she responded to every difficulty with love and patience as she grew in grace and virtue. The only survivor of a ship wreck was washed up on a small uninhabited island. He prayed feverishly for God to rescue him, and every day he scanned the horizon for help, but no ne seemed forthcoming. Exhausted, he eventually managed to build a little hut out of driftwood to protect him from the elements, and to store his fe w possessions.

But then one day, after scavenging for food, he arr ived home to find his little hut in flames, the smoke rolling up to the sk y. The worst had happened; everything was lost. He was stunned with grief and anger. "God, how could you do this to me!" he cried. Early the next da y, however, he was awakened by the sound of a ship that was approaching t he island. We need no t make your conduct conform only to that of the world and need not depend o n the approval or disapproval of others. God sees in secret, but rewards o penly. Daniel Harrington is a biblical scholar. When as ked where he finds God, he said:

"I stutter... As a young boy I rea d in a newspaper that Moses stuttered. I looked it up in the Bible, and su re enough in Exodus 4:10, Moses says to God: '...I am slow of speech and s low of tongue.' "

But Harrington found much more that this. H e found the story of God's self-revelation to Moses and of God's commission ing of Moses to speak that self-revelation to the world. Harrington ended, "I found God in the Bible, and I have continued to do so ever since." The n he added this caution:

When was the last time you kissed a child's boo-boos? Have you ever listened to a friend as they complained about their job? When your wi fe has had a rough day, do you rub her back, buy her favorite ice cream, suggest a movie out together? Do you have a reputation for being someone w ho can be counted on when things go wrong? If you answered yes, congratula tions! You've been practicing a spiritual work of mercy. The work of mercy we practice by kissing cuts or bringing home peach swirl is "Comforting the afflicted." Sometimes we think we have to volunteer our summers in Ethiopi a to help the afflicted. But when we think of mercy that way, we are setti ng ourselves up to feel guilty because we're not Mother Teresa.
