"Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. Do not judge , and you will not be judged; do not condemn, and you will not be condem ned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven; give, and it will be given to yo u. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap; for the measure you give will be the measure you get b ack." ~ Luke 6:36-38
Happiness cannot be sought directly; it is a by-product of love and service. Service is a law of our being. With love in our heart, there is always some service to other people. A life of pow er and joy and satisfaction is built on love and service. Persons who hate or are selfish are going against the law of their own being. They are cutti ng themselves off from God and other people. Little acts of love and encour agement, of service and help, erase the rough places of life and help to make the path smooth. If we do these things, we will surely have our share of happiness. ~ Fr. Pat Umberger

"Having nothing, and yet possessing everything." ~ 2 Co rinthians 6:10 NIV
A king once fell gravely ill. He grew worse with each passing day. His servants were ready to give up hope when the king's o ld nursemaid spoke up. "If you can find a happy man," she said, "take the shirt from his back, and put it on the king - then he will recover." His messengers rode fare and wide throughout the kingdom, and yet nowhere coul d they find a happy man. No one seemed content; everyone had some kind of complaint. If a man was rich, he didn't have enough. If he was not rich, it was someone else's fault.
Finally one night the king's son was pa ssing a small cottage when he heard someone say: "Thank you, LORD. I've fi nished my daily labor, and helped my fellow man. I've eaten my fill, and now I can lie down and sleep in peace." The prince rejoiced in having found a happy man at last. He gave orders to take the fellow's shirt to the king , and of course pay the owner as much money as ...

Anne Herbert was sit ting in a restaurant in Sausalito, California, when she wrote down a phra se she'd been mulling over for days. Now the phrase is seen everywhere on b umper stickers, business cards, and at the bottom of letters. One woman s aw it spray painted on a warehouse 100 miles from her home. When she got ho me, she tried to recall it to write it down, but it wasn't quite right. S o she drove all the way back to copy it. The phrase that appeals to so many reads:
"Practice random kindness and senseless acts of beauty."
Herbert believes that "random kindness" can trigger a tidal wave of goo d in the world, just as "random violence" triggers evil. Maybe that's why the phrase is seen everywhere. It touches something deep in the heart; it appeals to the very best in us. ~ Fr. Pat Umberger

Alec Guinness played the British co lonel in The Bridge on the River Kwai. His autobiography, Blessi ng in Disguise, describes a moving episode that began to thaw hi s anti-Catholicism and prepare the way for his becoming a Catholic.
He was in a film being shot in France. One night, dressed as a priest, he was walking to the film site. A small boy ran up, grabbed his hand, swun g it playfully, and prattled on nonstop. Alec wrote: "He obviously took me for a priest and so to be trusted. Suddenly with a 'Bon soir, mon pere', ... he disappeared... I was left with an odd calm sense of elation. Contin uing my walk, I reflected that a Church which could inspire such confidenc e in a child, making its priests... so easily approachable could not be as scheming and creepy as so often made out." ~ Mark Link, S.J.

"I stretch out my hands to You; My soul longs for You, as a parched land." ~ Psalm 143:6
A nurse escorted a tired, anxiou s young man to the bedside of an elderly man. "Your son is here," she whis pered to the old man. He was heavily sedated because of the pain of his hea rt attack. He dimly saw the young man standing outside his oxygen tent. He extended his hand and the young man wrapped his fingers tightly around it, squeezing a message of encouragement. All through the night the young man held the old man's hand, offering gentle words of hope.
As dawn app roached, the old man died. The young man placed the lifeless hand he had b een holding on the bed, and then he went to notify the nurse. "Who was tha t man?" He asked. The startled nurse replied, "I thought he was your fathe r?" "No," he answered. "I never saw him before in my life." "Then why didn 't you say something?" asked the nurse.
He replied, "I also knew he needed his son, and his son just wasn't here. When...

"A generous man will prosper; he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed." ~ Proverbs 11:25
The most contented and s uccessful businessmen of my acquaintance are those who say sincerely: "God owns my business." Each of them acknowledges a responsibility to be as good an employee as possible for God. What they have learned is an attitude of trust - the belief that God knows what's best for us, His children. Puttin g our entire lives into His hands (yes, even our bankbooks and our mortgag e payments!), will not result in some kind of catastrophe. Have you thanke d God for your home? When you go to the grocery store, are you consciously grateful that you can pay for your family's needs? Have you asked God to b less your automobile with safety of operation? Have you offered to use it a s He directs? Do you feel that tithing is giving God something of yours - o r do you see it as returning to Him a fraction of what is already His? ~ Br ock Thoene, Protecting Your Income and Your...
