Soldiers are identified by their uniforms. Sp ies and undercover agents disguise themselves, hoping to slip in without b eing noticed. The LORD doesn't need undercover Christians. He needs those w ho wear His uniform and proudly identify themselves with Him. Do you act as a "secret believer" - one who unveils your Christianity only when it is no n-threatening? In hostile situations, do you cover up your true identity? This kind of clandestine discipleship makes it easy to deny the LORD in dif ficult times. When the apostle Peter tried to secretly follow the LORD at a distance, on three occasions he denied that he knew Jesus. To come out of your foxhole, you must first decide to be identified with Jesus Christ as your LORD and Savior. No more secrecy, no more undercover discipleship. Astronauts Aldrin and Armstrong had just landed on the moon. While Armstrong prepared for his moonwalk, Aldrin unp acked bread and wine. Aldrin wrote: "I poured the wine into the chalice... This month, back in 1865, the slain body of Presid ent Lincoln lay in state in Cleveland, Ohio. It was on its way from Washin gton, DC to Springfield, Illinois, where it would be buried. In the long line of people filing past the body was a poor black woman and her little son. When they reached the president's body, the woman lifted up her son a nd said in a hushed voice, "Honey, take a long, long look. That man died for you."

It underscores the emotion, pain and passion o f the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Anyone who has seen the movie came out o f the theatre understanding better just how incredible his love for us is. Everything about the Son of God comes down to this: he forgives us because he loves us. As we all know love is the cornerstone o the virtue of Charity . If you have seen the movie, especially with others in a movie theatre, the sense of unity and fraternity that it offers is profound.

Dorothy Day died in New York City in 1980. The N ew York Times called her the most influential person in the histo ry of American Catholicism. There's now a movement to canonize her for her personal life of poverty and for her work among the poor. In her book, Union Square to Rome, Day wrote that before her conversion to Catholic ism she used to go to early morning Mass at St. Joseph's Church on Sixth Av enue. What attracted her were the people kneeling in prayer. She says, "I longed for their faith. So I used to go in and kneel in the back pew." Jim Johnson was sent to save a failing hotel. The situation was so bad that Jim decided upon desperate measures. Each night he drove to a hil l overlooking the hotel. He parked, sat in the car, and prayed for twenty minutes. He prayed for the hotel guests, behind the lighted windows. He p rayed for the employees and their families. He prayed for himself.

G radually, changes started to take place in the hotel. A new spirit radiate d from its employees. Hew warmth greeted each new guest. Hope permeated the operation. Within a year, the hotel was back on its feet.

The Polish bishop and martyr, St. Stanislaus, spent seven years studying canon law and theology. He earned a doctorate, but he refu sed it out of humility. When his parents died, Stanislaus gave away his in heritance, and was ordained a priest.

Stanislaus' great eloquence a nd piety generated a spirit of renewal and conversion in the local communit y. When he became bishop in 1072, Stanislaus soon found himself embroiled in political affairs. He was outspoken in his attacks upon political and so cial injustices of the immoral King Boleslaus II, who warred with his neig hbors and oppressed the peasantry. In 1079, the bishop excommunicated Bole slaus. After watching the boy's efforts, the priest steps smartly across the street. When the Spa nish explorer Hernando Cortez landed in Mexico in 1519, he was intent on c onquest. To ensure the devotion of his men, he set fire to this fleet of e leven ships. The apostle Paul also understood th e price of dedication. Although Truman hastened the war's end with his controversial decision to drop the atom bomb, he ordered a "peace statement" to be made on the nation's presidential seal. In 1923, Christi an Brother Barnabas McDonald, a noted expert in the field of social welfar e work with young people, created an official junior organization for the Knights of Columbus, the Columbian Squires. He formed the Squires as a fai thful group of young Catholic men between the ages of 12 and 18.

App roximately 26,000 Squires belong to more than 1,000 Circles international ly. The Squires are active throughout the United States, Canada, the Phil ippines, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Guam. Cesar Chavez has been called a "modern-day Moses" for migrant workers. He brought unit to their ranks in Florida and helped them achieve their first labor contract. It brought justice to the poorest of the poor. He died on this date in 1993 and was carried to his rest by ov er 35,000 marchers amid dancing and mariachi music. Sons, grandsons, and celebrities rotated as pall bearers carrying the plain white pine coffin t hat was built by his brother. Singer Pearl Bailey died in 1990. Her heart was a big as her body. Her spirit truly shined when an Amtrak train with 400 passengers on board jumped the track in Mansfield, Ohio, slamming into an embankment. A mid the wreckage and confusion, a familiar voice rang out calmly, "This i s Pearl, honey! Don't worry! Everything's going to be all right!"

Ages ago a flock of a th ousand quails lived together in a forest in India. They would have been hap py, but they were in great dread of their enemy, the quail hunter. He wou ld tick them by mocking their call and then capturing them with a great net .

The wise quail said, "Brothers! When the fowler throws his net over us. let each one put his head through a mesh in the net and then all will lift it up together and fly away with it!" Redwood trees are the giants of the forest. They tower above the earth at h eights of over three hundred feet. Unlike most trees, which send their roo ts to a depth equaling their height, redwoods send their roots outward, i ntermingling their roots with one another. Together they form a fortified u nit, a secure stronghold that allows these giants to withstand high winds.

That is how strength is achieved among men as well, by work ing together as a unified whole. The supply may n ot be immediately available, because we many not be entirely ready to rece ive it, but it will surely come when we are properly prepared for it. A neighborhood grocery store is owned by a couple of simple means. Although they don't talk a lot about God , they live in His presence. Their love for each other makes their store a holy place. Customers leave the store feeling more human.... closer to God.

After a long, twelve-hour day, the couple puts things in order for the next day, turns off the lights, and bolts the door. Then th ey go home, have a glass of wine, watch TV, and say their simple prayers to a friendly God or light a candle to the Madonna. Sometimes they play ca rds or reminisce. "May Day" was celebrated throughout the Comm unist world as a way of supposedly honoring the role and importance of labo rers in Marxist countries. The Communist conception of work as an end in it self was, of course, very different from the Christian understanding. In 1955, to highlight this difference, Pope Pius XII instituted the feast of St. Joseph the Worker. Joseph, the husband of Mary and the foster-father of Jesus, spent a lifetime laboring as a carpenter. His primary motivation for working wasn't a quest for riches or status, but a desire to s erve God and to care for his family in a loving way. Joseph never worked an y miracles; he never made any important speeches; he wasn't a public figu re, but was known only as a humble carpenter (Matthew 13:55). Joseph labor ed in obscurity, but was nonetheless given an important part in God's plan .
