Cesar Chavez has been called a "modern-day Moses" for migrant workers. He brought unit to their ranks in Florida and helped them achieve their first labor contract. It brought justice to the poorest of the poor. He died on this date in 1993 and was carried to his rest by ov er 35,000 marchers amid dancing and mariachi music. Sons, grandsons, and celebrities rotated as pall bearers carrying the plain white pine coffin t hat was built by his brother. One of the gifts presented at Mass was a shor t-handled hoe, the backbreaking tool that was banned, thanks largely to C havez's efforts. ~ Mark Link, S.J.
