"I am the good shepherd. As the Father knows me and I know t he Father, in the same way I know my sheep and they know me." ~ John 1 0:14-15
In ancient England, dinner guest used to entertain other gu ests after meals. At one dinner an actor was present and did a fabulous ren dition of Psalm 23, "The LORD is my Shepherd." Everyone stood and applaude d. Then a guest noticed the aunt of the host dozing in the back of the room . The old woman was deaf and had missed almost all of the entertainment. Th e guest shouted, "Auntie, come up and do something." Everyone applauded.< br> She recited the same psalm. When she finished, there wasn't a dry e ye in the room. Later, the guest asked the actor, "Your rendition was fab ulous. So why were we so moved by the aunt?" He replied, "Simple - I know the psalm, but old auntie knows the Shepherd." ~ Mark Link, S.J.

"You see that a person is justified by what he does and not by faith alone." ~ James 2:24
The founder of the Benedictine Ord er, St. Benedict came from a distinguished Italian family (his sister was St. Scholastica). He studied in Rome, but disturbed by the city's sinful a nd chaotic nature, he chose to live as a hermit at the age of twenty. Soon afterwards some monks asked Benedict to be their leader; though this init ial experiment failed (as the monks were upset by Benedict's high standards , and even tried to poison him), the saint was enthusiastic over the idea of monasticism: monks living together in a community, combining contempla tion, work, and shared prayer. The Benedictine Rule emphasizes ora et labora ("prayer and works"). The saint performed many miracles, and when he died, he was buried in the same grave as his sister. H e could never have imagined the monasteries established under his influence played a vital role in preserving Western culture du...

"Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there a lso will my servant be. The Father will honor anyone who serves me." ~ John 12:26
The film, Chariots of Fire, is about Eric Liddel l, a Scott, and Britain''s top 100-meter runner and a cinch to win the go ld in the 1924 Paris Olympics. Deeply religious, Liddell never ran on Sund ay.
When the Olympic schedule was released, he was shocked. The 100-meter event was scheduled for Sunday. In spite of the incredible pr essure put upon him by the British press, Eric refused to compete. He swit ched to the 400-meter race, a race he had never run in his life.
Just before the race, an American runner, Jackson Scholz, handed Li ddell a note. It contained this sentence from John 12:26: "My Father will h onor anyone who serves me." Seconds later, Eric won the 400 meter-meter ev ent. Still clutched in his hand was the note Jackson Scholz had given him. ~ Mark Link, S.J.

"Do not love the world or the things in the world. The love of the Father is not in those who love the world; for all that is in the w orld - the desire of the flesh, the desire of the eyes, the pride in rich es - comes not from the Father but from the world. And the world and its de sire are passing away, bu those who do the will of God live forever." ~ i>1 John 2:15-17
Functioning on a material plane alone can take us a way from God. We can also try to function on a spiritual plane. Functioning on a spiritual plane as well as on a material plane can make life what it should be. All material activities are valueless in themselves alone. But a ll activities, seemingly trivial or of seemingly great moment, are all al ike if directed by God's guidance. We can try to obey God as we would expec t faithful, willing servants to carry out directions. ~ Fr. Pat Umberger Pray that the flow of God's spirit may come to us through many channe ls. Known as the "Lily of the Mohawks," the Native American Kateri Tekakwitha , was born near modern-day New York State. When Kateri was four, she was stricken with smallpox which left her with a pock-mocked face and partial b lindness. Kateri became skilled at decorating leather moccasins and clothin g, but her relatives treated her like a slave. When Jesuit missionaries vi sited here village, she was too shy to ask for religious instruction. One of the priests, noticing her piety, spoke to her about Jesus. Kateri was delighted, and she was later baptized. Because she thereafter refused to w ork on Sundays, her relatives accused her of laziness and disrespect, and treated here severely. This, and the harsh penances she practiced, serio usly affected her health, but she responded to every difficulty with love and patience as she grew in grace and virtue. Helped by other sympathetic I ndians, she escaped to a Catholic settlement near Montrea...

"Call upon me in the day of trouble; I will rescue you, an d you shall honor me." ~ Psalm 50:15
The only survivor of a ship wreck was washed up on a small uninhabited island. He prayed feverishly for God to rescue him, and every day he scanned the horizon for help, but no ne seemed forthcoming. Exhausted, he eventually managed to build a little hut out of driftwood to protect him from the elements, and to store his fe w possessions.
But then one day, after scavenging for food, he arr ived home to find his little hut in flames, the smoke rolling up to the sk y. The worst had happened; everything was lost. He was stunned with grief and anger. "God, how could you do this to me!" he cried. Early the next da y, however, he was awakened by the sound of a ship that was approaching t he island. It had come to rescue him. "How did you know I was here?" asked the weary man of his rescuers. They replied, "We saw your smoke signal." ~ Author unknown
