Singer Pearl Bailey died in 1990. Her heart was a big as her body. Her spirit truly shined when an Amtrak train with 400 passengers on board jumped the track in Mansfield, Ohio, slamming into an embankment. A mid the wreckage and confusion, a familiar voice rang out calmly, "This i s Pearl, honey! Don't worry! Everything's going to be all right!"

Ages ago a flock of a th ousand quails lived together in a forest in India. They would have been hap py, but they were in great dread of their enemy, the quail hunter. He wou ld tick them by mocking their call and then capturing them with a great net .

The wise quail said, "Brothers! When the fowler throws his net over us. let each one put his head through a mesh in the net and then all will lift it up together and fly away with it!" The next day, the fowl er threw his net, and the birds escaped as they had planned. This continue d for many days, and the fowler's wife grew angry. The fowler explained, "The trouble is tat all the birds are working together and helping one anot her."

Redwood trees are the giants of the forest. They tower above the earth at h eights of over three hundred feet. Unlike most trees, which send their roo ts to a depth equaling their height, redwoods send their roots outward, i ntermingling their roots with one another. Together they form a fortified u nit, a secure stronghold that allows these giants to withstand high winds.

That is how strength is achieved among men as well, by work ing together as a unified whole. Men working together bring strength, whet her dealing in the workplace, leading families at home, or serving in chu rches. Unfortunately, individualism among men prevails in the church. I've stepped over the line. I am out on the comfort zone.
The decision has been made. I am a follower of Jesus Christ.
I won't loo k back, let up, slow down or back away.
I am finished with low living , small planning, smooth knees, tame visions, chintzy giving and dwarfed goals.
I no longer need pre-eminence, prosperity, positions or popula rity.
I don't have to be right, first, recognized, praised or rewarded.
I now learn by faith, love by patience, lift by prayer and l abor by power. My face is set, my gait is fast.
My goal is heaven, my road is rough, my Guide reliable.
I cannot be bought, compromised, de toured, lured away, turned back, diluted or delayed.

We need not let ourselves think that we cannot d o something useful, or that we never will be able to accomplish a useful t ask. The fact is that we can do anything in the field of human relationship s, if we are willing to call on God's supply of strength. The supply may n ot be immediately available, because we many not be entirely ready to rece ive it, but it will surely come when we are properly prepared for it. As w e grow spiritually, a feeling of being plentifully supplied by God's stren gth will possess us and we will be able to accomplish many useful things. ~ Fr. Pat Umberger

Pray that we may claim God's supply of strength by our faith in Him. Pray that is shall be given to us when we are ready to r eceive it.
