In the memoirs of his political l ife, Tip says that he'll never forget a day in Missouri in 1960 when he wa s with Jack Kennedy in a campaign parade. Once there was a war bet ween the birds and the beasts. The Bat was on the birds' side. When he saw defeat was imminent, he crept away and hid under a log until the fight was over. When the victorious beasts were going home, Bat slipped in among th em. The beasts noticed him and said, "Didn't you fight against us?" Bat replied, "Oh no! I'm one of you. Abraham Lincoln succeeded James Buchanan as president in 1861. Ed Stanton , a member of Buchanan's cabinet, disdained and ridiculed Lincoln. A year into the presidency, Lincoln had to replace his Secretary of War. He chose Stanton, explaining, "I know the terrible things he said about me. But h e's the best man for the job."
Shortly thereafter, Lee surrendered to Grant, and Lincoln was assassinated. One of the first public officials to reach Lincoln's side was Stanton. Abraham Lincoln delivered his famous "Divided H ouse Speech" at the Illinois State Convention in Springfield in 1858. Befor e doing so, he read it to several friends. One said it was ahead of its ti me. Another called it a fool utterance. A third predicted that it would dri ve away as many voters who had just come over to the Republican party. The German - hardly more than a boy - studies the French soldier' s dying eyes. Moved to pity, he makes him comfortable and gives him drink. When he dies, the German soldier feels great remorse.
