"She is clothed with strength and dignity, and she laughs a t the days to come. She opens her mouth in wisdom, and on her tongue is ki ndly counsel. She watches the conduct of her household. Her children rise u p and praise her. Give her a reward for her labors, and let her works prai se her." ~ Proverbs 31
Once upon a time there was a child ready to be born. One day the child asked God: How am I going to live on earth being so small and helpless? Among the angels I chose one for you. She will care for you. But, here in Heaven, I don't do anything else but s ing and smile. Your angel will sing for you and will also smile for you every day. And you will feel your angel's love and be happy. And what am I going to do when I want to talk to You? Your angel will place your hands together and teach you to pray. I've heard that on earth there ar e bad men. Who will protect me? Your angel will defend you even if it me ans risking its life. But I will always be...

Glenn Van Ekeren gives seminars on maximizing human potential. He is fond of telling the story about a basketball coach who had the rare art of inspiring teams with the courage to fight back when things looked impossible. During the h alftime of one difficult game, he stood before the team and yelled, "Did Michael Jordan ever quit?" The team yelled back, "No!"
The coach ye lled, "Did Cal Ripken, Jr. ever quit?" The team yelled, "No!" "What abou t the Wright brothers? Did they quit?" "No!" yelled the team. Then the coac h shouted, "And what about Elmer McAllister. Did he ever quit?" There was a awkward pause. Then the team captain said, "Coach, we never heard of hi m." "Of course you didn't!" shouted the coach. "He quit!" ~ Mark Link, S.J .

Young Joseph of Cupertino labored under a learning disability and was considered dull and clumsy. When he tried to enter religious life, he was turned down by one monastery after another. Finally, in spite of his disab ility, a Franciscan group agreed to accept him.
Joseph acquired eno ugh knowledge to be ordained a priest. Eventually, many miracles were attr ibuted to him and many credible people, including Pope Urban VIII, saw hi m "levitate" while praying. His constant admonition to people was "Pray, p ray, pray!" ~ Mark Link, S.J.

"God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that i s above every name." ~ Philippians 2:9
St. Bernardine of Siena w as known for his popularity with ordinary people. He once cared for an elde rly woman who constantly pronounced the "Jesus" with great devotion. Bernar dine was profoundly affected, and decided to make the name of Jesus the th eme of his own life. When Siena was struck by a plague, Bernardine nursed the sick until he himself became ill. After recovering, he became a Franci scan monk, and was ordained a priest in 1404. Bernardine spent a dozen yea rs in solitude and prayer, and was then sent forth as a preacher. Bernardi ne was especially now for his devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus (see aboe verse), and he devised a symbol - IHS (the first three letter s of the name Jesus in Greek) - to represent it. The symbol began to replac e the superstitious symbols of the day. When a manufacturer of playing card s complained that the saint's preaching against g...

"My teaching and message were not delivered with skillful wo rds... but with convincing proof of the power of God's Spirit." ~ 1 Cor inthians 2:4
TV celebrity Malcolm Muggeridge interviewed Mother Tere sa of Calcutta. The verdict of the videotaped interview was that it was har dly usable. Mother Teresa's delivery was halting and her accent was thick. One BBC official, however, felt that the interview had a mysterious power and decided to air it on a Sunday night. Response to the program was amazi ng - both in terms of mail and contributions. What came through was not "sk illful words" but "the power of God's Spirit" speaking through Mother Teres a - the same power that Paul talks about in today's Bible reading. ~ Mark L ink, S.J.

The Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius contains this guideline for life: "I believe we were created to share our life and love with God and other p eople forever. I believe that God created all other things to help us carry out this lofty purpose. I believe, therefore, that we should use the oth er things God created, insofar as they help us carry out the purpose for w hich we were created and to abstain from them insofar as they hinder us fro m doing this. Therefore, we shouldn't prefer, out of hand, certain thing s to others, for example, health to sickness, wealth to poverty, honor to dishonor, or a long life to a short one. Our sole norm for preferring a thing should be how well it helps us attain the end for which we were crea ted." ~ Mark Link. S.J.

"Stand firm and steady.... Nothing you do in the LORD's serv ice is ever useless." ~ 1 Corinthians 15:58
At the end of the Re volutionary War, the new United States owed back pay to the soldiers, men who fought long and hard for the nation's freedom. Mutiny was close at han d. There was only one man who could influence them.
On March 15, 17 83, George Washington met with the armed forces. They had revered him duri ng the lean, hard years of fighting; now, they glared at him with restle ss eyes. Washington spoke of his own dedicated service. He begged them not to "open the flood gates of civil discord, and deluge our rising empire in blood." He appealed to their honor and glory thus far. Then he paused. His audience did not seem moved. Washington produced a letter from the governm ent that he started to read slowly. He stumbled and stuttered. Then Washing ton pulled from his pocket something his men had never seen him use before - spectacles. "Gentlemen, you must pardon me," he...
