This story makes an important point. The Church is not a place where people gather. It is the people who gather. To have Church we must g ather. It's like the bread that we use for the Eucharist. Composer Giacomo Puccini was stricken by cancer while working on his last opera, Turandot. He said to his students, "If I don't finish it, finish it for me." Shortly afterward, he died. His students carried out his wish. In 1926, Puccini's favorite st udent, Arturo Toscanini, directed the premiere in Milan. When the opera r eached the point where Puccini was forced to put down his pen, Toscanini s topped the music, turned to the audience, and cried out, "Thus far the M aster wrote, but he died." A reverent silence filled the opera house.  ;

"So keep up your courage, men..." ~ Acts 27:25
A decline in courage may be the most striking feature an outside observer no tices in the West today. The Western world has lost its civic courage, bot h as a whole and separately, in each country, in each government, in eac h political party, and, of course, in the United Nations. Such a decline in courage is particularly noticeable among the ruling and intellectual el ites, causing an impression of a loss of courage by the entire society.
There remains many courageous individuals, but they have no determini ng influence on public life. Political functionaries exhibit this depressio n, passivity, and perplexity in their actions and in their statements, a nd even more so in their self-serving rationales, as to how morally justif ied it is to base state policies on weakness and cowardice.

In his book, Swimming in the Sun, Albert Haase tells how one afternoon, he was walki ng through the grounds of the infamous Dachau concentration camp. Coming to the spot where Barracks 26 once stood, he paused and prayed. That barrack s was the prison dormitory where many Catholics were imprisoned by the Nazi s in World War II. Each day they were given one meal, consisting of a chun k of bread and a cup of watered-down soup.
Each day one of th e prisoners sacrificed their meager bread ration to make possible the celeb ration of the Mass. This 'daily bread' ration was then secretly consecrated by a priest and passed around as communion for prisoners. ~ Mark Link, S. J.
How willing are we as Knights to sacrifice what we have so that o thers may receive their physical or spiritual "daily bread"?

A basketball team had just celebrate d a prayer service before playing in the state tournament. During the servi ce, the chaplain said to the team, "The important thing ten years from no w won't be whether or not you won the state championship. Rather, it will be what you became in the process of trying to win it."
After the pr ayer service, the coach said to the players: "Sit down a minute. Our chapl ain said something that is bothering me. I wonder what we've become trying to put together a winning season. Have we become more loyal to one another? More brotherly? Better Catholics? I hope to God that we have. Because if w e haven't, we've failed God, we've failed one another, we've failed ours elves." ~ Mark Link, S.J.

"Then the angel said to her, 'Do not be afraid, Mary, fr you have found favor with God. Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus.'" ~ Luke 1:30-31
The Solemnity of the Annunciation marks the moment when God Himself began redee ming the unborn child - and all of us who once were unborn children - by be coming one Himself. Never can the unborn be considered too small to possess rights, for God Himself was that small.
The Annunciation te aches us the fruitfulness of self-giving. When Mary said "Yes" to "Life", she knew the road ahead would be difficult, yet she embraced the vocation of motherhood. This is precisely the opposite behavior that avoids responsi bility, and culminates in abortion. What happened at the Annunciation over comes the fear and despair that lead to violence. Marry's life gives courag e to all mothers who are afraid of the suffering that might lay ahead and a ssures them that they are not alone.

Nelda Bonner was dying of cancer. In her final months, sleep became diffi cult. So she would write in a journal. Her five children found it after her death. It contained over 40 handwritten pages of memories. Here are some e xcerpts:
"In a strange way, I have been happier this last year than I have ever been. I have a peace and calmness that I have never had before . I have discovered what my real relationship with God is... Your daddy and I are closer than we have ever been. He has been my rock. I have learned t o appreciate more than ever small things: a few hours of felling good... th e lovely faces of my grandchildren. I glory in the beauty around me - I tru ly look at the world through the eyes of love." ~ Mark Link, S.J.

Twice a year geese migrate in a V formation, as a flock. Philip Yancey explains: "That's the secret of their strength... cooperating as a flock, geese can increase their flig ht distance by 71 percent... The lead goose cuts a swath through the air re sistance, which creates a helping uplift for the two birds behind him. In turn, their beating makes it easier on the birds behind them... Each bird takes his turn as the leader. The tired birds fan out to the edges of the V for a breather, and the rested ones surge forward to the point of the V t o drive the flock onward." ~ Campus Life

"Endure hardship with us like a good soldier of Jesus Christ '" ~ 2 Timothy 2:3
Soldiers are identified by their uniforms. Sp ies and undercover agents disguise themselves, hoping to slip in without b eing noticed. The LORD doesn't need undercover Christians. He needs those w ho wear His uniform and proudly identify themselves with Him. Do you act as a "secret believer" - one who unveils your Christianity only when it is no n-threatening? In hostile situations, do you cover up your true identity? This kind of clandestine discipleship makes it easy to deny the LORD in dif ficult times. When the apostle Peter tried to secretly follow the LORD at a distance, on three occasions he denied that he knew Jesus. To come out of your foxhole, you must first decide to be identified with Jesus Christ as your LORD and Savior. No more secrecy, no more undercover discipleship. S traightforwardly proclaiming your allegiance to the LORD is practical evide nce of your faith. ~ Carman, adapted from R...

Astronauts Aldrin and Armstrong had just landed on the moon. While Armstrong prepared for his moonwalk, Aldrin unp acked bread and wine. Aldrin wrote: "I poured the wine into the chalice... In the one-sixth gravity of the moon the wine curled slowly and gracefully up the side of the cup. It was interesting to think that the very first liq uid ever poured on the moon and the very first food eaten there were commun ion elements. The great Am erican concert violinist, Fritz Kreisler, said: "I was born with music in my system. It was a gift from God. I didn't acquire it. So I do not even d eserve thanks for the music. Music is too sacred to be sold, and the outra geous prices charged by musical celebrities today are truly a crime against society. I never look upon the money as my own. It is public money. It is only a fund entrusted to me for proper disbursement... In all these years o f my so-called success in music, mu wife and I have not built a hou se for ourselves. "For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who ar e perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God." ~& nbsp;1 Corinthians 1:18
I once saw a man in Los Angeles wearing a s ign that said, "I'm a fool for Christ. Whose fool are you?" I thought at t he time, "That's the most stupid thing I've ever seen." But one night many years later it would be revealed to me that God - who is more than just an image on a piece of wood - loved me. And though I had shunned Him all my l ife, I realized my desperate need of Him.
It was then I understood the truth of that odd sign I had seen years before: the cross is foolishnes s to those who are perishing. That night I knelt at the foot of the cross a nd believed in Jesus. I have been a fool for Christ ever since. ~ John Wimb er, adapted

"Christ Jesus... gave himself to redeem all mankind." ~ 1 Timothy 2:5-6
This month, back in 1865, the slain body of Presid ent Lincoln lay in state in Cleveland, Ohio. It was on its way from Washin gton, DC to Springfield, Illinois, where it would be buried. In the long line of people filing past the body was a poor black woman and her little son. When they reached the president's body, the woman lifted up her son a nd said in a hushed voice, "Honey, take a long, long look. That man died for you."
What that mother said about Lincoln, every mother could say to her child about Jesus. Both Jesus and Lincoln tell us that waging wa r against evil involves great personal suffering - even the loss of one's o wn life. ~ Mark Link, S.J.

"For thou, O LORD, art good and forgiving, abounding in s teadfast love to all who call on thee." ~ Psalm 86:5
THE PASS ION OF THE CHRIST a movie directed by Mel Gibson, has depicted t he last 12 hours of Jesus Christ's life, in no way that the film industry has ever dramatized before. It underscores the emotion, pain and passion o f the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Anyone who has seen the movie came out o f the theatre understanding better just how incredible his love for us is. Everything about the Son of God comes down to this: he forgives us because he loves us. As we all know love is the cornerstone o the virtue of Charity . If you have seen the movie, especially with others in a movie theatre, the sense of unity and fraternity that it offers is profound.
The ne xt time you receive the Body and Blood of Christ, remember that it is his actual Body and Blood, and that despite how dramatic the movie might have been, it still pales in comparison to receiving and e...
