[All day event] PATRIOTISM is working for peace

Although Truman hastened the war's end with his controversial decision to drop the atom bomb, he ordered a "peace statement" to be made on the nation's presidential seal. It was used to sh ow an eagle with arrows (war) in one talon and the olive branch (peace) in the other. Early versions had the eagle face the arrows. Truman ordered all future versions to show the eagle facing the olive branch, to symbolize t hat our nation was turned toward peace, not war. ~ Mark Link, S.J.
