Robert Fulton pioneered the first American steamship, the Clermont. A crowed lined New York's Hudson River to watch its attemp t at a first voyage. A critic in the crowd shouted. "They'll never get it s tarted!" But it did start! It picked up speed! Faster and Faster! Smoke pou red from its funnel. The crowd on the bank cheered wildly.
