"Be on your guard, stand firm in the faith, be men of cour age, be strong." ~ 1 Corinthians 16:13
In 1881, Father McGivne y began to explore the idea of a Catholic, fraternal benefit society. In a era when parish clubs and fraternal societies had wide popular appeal, th e young priest felt there should be some way to strengthen religious faith and at the same time provide for the financial needs of families overwhelme d by illness or death of the breadwinner. Father McGiveny had suggested "So ns of Columbus" as a name for the Order. This would bind Catholicism and Am ericanism together through the faith and bold vision of the New World's exp lorer (see October 12th entry). The word "knights" replaced "sons" b ecause Irish-born Civil War veterans wanted to apply a noble ritual in supp ort of the emerging cause of Catholic civil liberty. The Order's principles in 1882 were UNITY and CHARITY. The concepts of FRATERNITY and PATRIOTISM were added later. These Columbus-linked themes ...

"And coming to her (Mary), he (the angel Gabriel) said, 'H ail, favored one (kecharitomene).'" ~ Luke 1:28
Mary was exempt ed from bodily corruption because, by an entirely singular privilege, she completely overcame sin by her Immaculate Conception. Jesus ascended to He aven by His own power as Creator and LORD. Mary was taken into Heaven by th e power of God, raised aloft by grace, not by nature. Pope Pius said, "C hrist has overcome sin and death by His own death... However, in accord wi th His general rule, God does not wish to grant the full effect of victory over death to the just until the end of time shall have come... Yet God wi shed that the Blessed Virgin Mary be exempt from this general law. For she , by a completely singular privilege, conquered sin in her Immaculate Conc eption, and thus was not liable to that law of remaining in the corruption of the grave, nor did she have to wait for the end of time for the redemp tion of her body (AAS 42.754)." ~ J.M. David Brenner grew up poor in Philad elphia. He didn't expect a graduation gift when he finished high school. Ye t, he received one he never forgot. "Some of my friends got some neat gift s. "In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as th eir own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. After all, no one eve r hated his own body, but he heeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church." ~ Ephesians 5:28-29
Husband, take positives steps to meet your partner's emotional needs. Your wife longs to be encouraged, built up, and praised. She wants to feel close to you emotionally. This wi ll come as you love her in the way the Bible describes. A husband can alway s meet his wife's deepest needs by loving her as Christ loves us. A husband 's love has been compared to a warm coat he wraps around his wife. As long as she feels encircled and sheltered in his love, she can give herself com pletely to him. In this safety, she can accept herself as a woman and valu e her femininity.
We husbands may not be able to fully appreciate th e deep longings that influence our wives, but if we love them with the she ltering love described in Ephesians 5:28-29 we wil...
