Speaki ng extemporaneously at the Vatican in 1973, Pope Paul VI said: "Tell your sons, your grandsons; tell the people that the pope loves the Knights of Columbus." Earlier he remarked: "Indeed you have been brothers to the poor , to the sick, to the young, to the aged and to the underprivileged. In t he name of all those whom you have helped by your brotherly compassion, we thank you from our heart... Even more admirable have been your insistence upon the supremacy of God and your fidelity to the vicar of Christ. In trut h you can call yourselves "brothers" because you call God your Father and h ave declared yourselves ready to do His will and serve His cause. In 1978, the Holy Father called the Knights "an immense force for good... We rely o n you, on each of you, on the Order itself - to bring holiness to the wor ld, to live the Gospel values in your families, to transmit them to your children with the infectious conviction of joyful fait...

One night, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was just about to doze off when the phone rang. A voice on the other end said, "Listen, ni gger, we've taken all we want from you. Before next week, you'll be sorry you ever came to Montgomery".

Dr. King hung up. Suddenly, all of h is fears came crashing down on him. He got up and heated a pot of coffee. T hen he sat down at the kitchen table, bowed his head, and prayed: "People are looking to me for leadership, and if I stand before them without stre ngth and courage, they too will falter. I am at the end of my powers. I ha ve nothing left. I've come to the point where I can't face it alone." I go for long walks in the woods a lot, and I ask myself if I'm handling (all this success) the way it ought to be handled. I don't know wh y it happened to me. God has a purpose for it. We are able to contribute an awful lot of money to His work, and maybe that's why. But I firmly believ e it will be over one of these days - five years from now, ten years from now. A teacher told her class, "When I was a girl , my grandma gave me a big cucumber inside a bottle with a narrow neck. She said she'd tell me a 'big secret' when I figured out how she got it into t he bottle. One day I was walking in Grandma's garden, and I saw a bottle i nto which she had inserted a vine with a tiny cucumber on it. Now I knew ho w she got the cucumber in the bottle; she grew it there.

The n Grandma told me her 'big secret'. She said a 'good habit' formed in child hood is like a tiny cucumber inserted in a bottle - or like a tiny bit of y east inserted in dough. The habit grows so big and strong inside you that n o one can take it away from you. ~ Mark Link, S.J.

Psychologist Julius Segal worked with the 52 Americans held captive by Iran for 444 days in the early 1980s. He listed four reasons why some of them n ot only survived the ordeal but also grew stronger as a result of it.

First, They resisted the temptation to withdraw into themselves. Second, they helped other captives. Shifting attention from their own woes and reaching out to help others had a remarkable healing effect on them. T hird, they dept control of their lives. One captive invited his guards to sit down each time they entered his room. "This was my space, " he said. " They were m guests." This tiny gesture helped him stay in control and resis t becoming a passive victim. Lastly, they learned to tap inner powers thro ugh prayer and meditation. ~ Mark Link, S.J.
