You cannot give quality time unless you give a q uantity of time. You need to be there. Be alert for those priceless irrepla ceable moments when your child needs to belt down a strong gulp of Dad. To be honest, most of the time you spend with your children will be wasted. W hat they do is suddenly - no one can predict when - open up, and ta ke a long swig of Dad. Then they go back to their preoccupation and put you in a holding mode again.

In a national survey, men complained that 'time' keeps them from being the family shepherd they want to be. It may b e true that men are over-scheduled and exhausted. But it's not a question o f time. A man does what he wants to do. His busy schedule reveals his prior ities, not his unavailability. He chooses his top priorities and makes sur e they get scheduled.

Most men know better what to do wit h children when they function. Now that a little boy plays more productivel y, a father can step in and begin to teach him to "do" some things. About this time, a little boy recognizes a kinship with his father and begins to form an identity as a male. Our fathers teach us how to work. Our fathers show us how to do things together. Our fathers teach us to take risks. All of these are great lessons. And if your were one of a fortunate few, perha ps your father was also tender and nurturing. Our understanding of God as the Father is affected by our experie nces with our own father. So many young people in America today grow up wit hout a father in their life. Can we blame them then for not understanding t he heavenly Father? God says, "If you will listen to me, I will seal you with My Spirit of adoption. You will be a joint heir through Christ. You wi ll no longer be an orphan, but My child." God seals us by His Spirit. ;

God desires an intimate relationship with us His children. Throug h this intimacy, God can shape our view of Him and our view of how we thin k He see us. We will begin to realize how much God loves us. We can experie nce the depth of His unconditional love for us. We can go confidently into His presence, addressing Him intimately as "Abba, Father." I want to ask you, Dad: When w as the last time your children saw you on your knees, seeking direction fr om God? That's and unmistakable lesson to a child. To be a spiritual man yo u must take time to talk to Him and to listen to him through His Word. The regularity of this meeting, not its length, is the important thing. When you're running late, pause long enough to get on your knees and tell the L ORD, "I am committing this day to you. Late as I am, I am not leaving thi s house without getting on my knees before You." God will reward that commi tment.
