"Mary said, "Behold, I am the handmaid of the LORD. May it be done to me according to your word." Then the angel departed from her." ~ Luke 1:38
Today I saw a water lily growing in a pond. It had the freshest yellow color I'd ever seen. The lily - a precious treasur e - was unconcerned about whether anyone noticed its astounding beauty. As I sat there, watching it unfold its petals noiselessly, I thought of Mary pregnant with Jesus. She, Too was a precious treasure. She, too, was un concerned about whether anyone noticed her astounding beauty. But to those who did, she shared a secret. Her beauty came not from herself, but from the Jesus life within her, unfolding its petals noiselessly. ~ A medita tion on Mary composed by a college student

"And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God." ~ Micah 6:8 NIV
W hen I was in medical school, our professor gave us a pop quiz. I was a con scientious student and had breezed through the questions, until I read the last one: "What is the first name of the woman who cleans our school?"
Surely this was some kind of a joke. I had seen the cleaning woman almo st every day. She was tall, dark-haired and in her 50's, but how would I know her name? I handed in my paper, leaving the last question blank.  ;
Before class ended, one student asked if the last question would count toward our quiz grade. "Absolutely", said the professor. "In your c areers you will meet many people. All are significant. They deserve your at tention and care, even if all you do is smile and say "hello".
I've never forgotten that lesson. I also learned her name was Dorothy. ~ Author unknown

".... there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. If one part suffers, ever y part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it." ~ 1 Corinthians 12:25-26
I tremble to make the analogy betw een cancer in the physical body and mutiny in the spiritual body of Christ. But I must. In His warnings to the church, Jesus showed no concern about the shocks and bruises His Body would meet from external forces. "Th e gates of hell shall not prevail against my church (Matthew 16:18)." I must concentrate on how I, as an individual cell, should respond to t he crying needs of the Body of Christ in other parts of the world.... From the perspective of spending eighteen years in one of the poorest countries on earth, the contrasts in resources are astonishingly large. We treated l eprosy patients on three dollars per patient per year. Then we came to Amer ica where some churches were heatedly discussing the...

American servicemen came hom e from the Pacific with all kinds of remembrances. Cyril O'Brien treasures one, especially. It is a small holy picture of Our Lady.
One day, on the island of Guam, his patrol encountered three Japanese soldie rs. A volley of gunfire followed. Routinely, the patrol checked the dead s oldiers for grenades and possible intelligence material O'Brien put his han d into the pocket of one of the Japanese solders. It contained a picture of Mary. It was the pocket over the soldier's heart.

Thomas Jefferson was the autho r of the Declaration of Independence and the 3rd President of the United St ates. He once said: "The care of human life and happiness, and not their d estruction, is the first and only object of good government."
Yet, today, thousands of "legalized" abortions destroy human life each day in the country that Jefferson helped to found. Meanwhile, several million U.S . couples are on agency lists, waiting to adopt a child. ~ Mark Link S.J.< br> How do you explain the drift from the thinking of our founding fathe rs to the practice of modern citizens?
