"As you enter a house, wish it peace. If the house is worth y, let your peace come upon it; if not, let your peace return to you. Wh oever will not receive you or listen to your words - go outside that house or town and shake the dust from your feet." ~ Matthew 10:12-14
S chool children were cutting across the lawn of an elderly couple, wearing an ugly path in it. At first this only annoyed the couple. But soon annoyan ce turned into anger. The couple knew something had to be done. The situati on was wrecking their peace of mind. The couple's solution was beautiful. T hey put crushed gravel on the path, lined it with flowers, and set a benc h next to it. Then one afternoon, as when school let out, they sat on the bench and greeted the children. The children responded wonderfully. They t hanked the couple for the path and sat and chatted with them. ~ Mark Link, S.J.
Maybe we can't preach the gospel by word, but we can preach i t by example as the elderly couple did. How do we ha...

"Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so cl osely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us." ~ Hebrews 12:1
Catholic faith continually reminds us that we are not chess players in a dark room lit by a single light bulb, absolutely al one with God, but rather that we are being cheered on and helped by a huge heavenly stadium full of saints, virgins, martyrs and ordinary blokes wh o "fought the good fight" and "finished the race" under circumstances just like ours. Frustrated with your job? So were a million saints who soldiered through to heavenly glory. In pain, lonely, frightened, confused? They' ve been there too and they are shouting to you from the stands, "You can m ake it! We did! And we know you can too! God will save you as he saved us!" So run the race with perseverance and drop all the discouraging junk the w orld hands you. God will be with you every step of the...

"But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added to you." ~ Matthew 6:33
One day a sm all opening appeared on a cocoon As the butterfly struggled to bust through the tiny hole, a man sat waiting to see the butterfly appear. As a show o f compassion, he took a pair of scissors and snipped off the remaining bit of the cocoon. The butterfly then emerged easily - but it had a swollen bo dy and small, shriveled wings. The man continued to watch the butterfly ex pecting, at any moment, the wings would enlarge and expand. Neither happe ned. The butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling around with a swolle n body and shriveled wings. What the man did not understand is that the res trictive cocoon and the struggle required of the butterfly are nature's way of forcing fluid from its body into its wings. That way, it would be read y for flight once it achieved freedom from the cocoon. Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our lives. If we went...

"I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor he ight, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to sepa rate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our LORD." ~ Romans 8:38-3 9
We can withdraw into the calm of communion with God. We can rest i n that calm and peace. When the soul finds its home of rest in God, it is then that real life begins. Only when we are calm and serene can we do good work. Emotional upsets make us useless. The eternal life is calmness and w hen we enter into that, then we live as an eternal being. Calmness is base d on complete trust in God. Nothing in this world can separate us from the love of God. ~ Fr. Pat Umberger
Pray that we may wear the world like a loose garment. Pray that we may keep serene at the center of our being.< br> How could the forces in the above verses disrupt our trust in God's love?

"... You are all brothers." ~ Matthew 23:8
Speaki ng extemporaneously at the Vatican in 1973, Pope Paul VI said: "Tell your sons, your grandsons; tell the people that the pope loves the Knights of Columbus." Earlier he remarked: "Indeed you have been brothers to the poor , to the sick, to the young, to the aged and to the underprivileged. In t he name of all those whom you have helped by your brotherly compassion, we thank you from our heart... Even more admirable have been your insistence upon the supremacy of God and your fidelity to the vicar of Christ. In trut h you can call yourselves "brothers" because you call God your Father and h ave declared yourselves ready to do His will and serve His cause. In 1978, the Holy Father called the Knights "an immense force for good... We rely o n you, on each of you, on the Order itself - to bring holiness to the wor ld, to live the Gospel values in your families, to transmit them to your children with the infectious conviction of joyful fait...

"They said to one another, "Here comes that dreamer... Let' s kill him... Then we will see what becomes of his dreams." ~ Genesis 3 7:19-20
One night, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was just about to doze off when the phone rang. A voice on the other end said, "Listen, ni gger, we've taken all we want from you. Before next week, you'll be sorry you ever came to Montgomery".
Dr. King hung up. Suddenly, all of h is fears came crashing down on him. He got up and heated a pot of coffee. T hen he sat down at the kitchen table, bowed his head, and prayed: "People are looking to me for leadership, and if I stand before them without stre ngth and courage, they too will falter. I am at the end of my powers. I ha ve nothing left. I've come to the point where I can't face it alone." At th at moment, Dr. King felt God's presence as he had never felt it before. ~ Mark Link, S.J.
