Abraham Lincoln succeeded James Buchanan as president in 1861. Ed Stanton , a member of Buchanan's cabinet, disdained and ridiculed Lincoln. A year into the presidency, Lincoln had to replace his Secretary of War. He chose Stanton, explaining, "I know the terrible things he said about me. But h e's the best man for the job."
Shortly thereafter, Lee surrendered to Grant, and Lincoln was assassinated. One of the first public officials to reach Lincoln's side was Stanton. When Lincoln breathed his last, Stant on said with heartfelt sincerity, "There lays the world's greatest ruler. Now he belongs to the ages." ~ Mark Link, S.J.

Andy was married to a girl named Kim, and things weren't go ing well. He consulted a lawyer who had known him since he was a boy. After explaining the problem, he asked the lawyer to prepare separation papers. The lawyer peered over his glasses at Andy, whom he knew better than Andy thought.
He advised Andy to wait six months. In the meantime, he s hould call her from work on occasion, bring home small gifts, and take he r to dinner on special days. Then go through with the separati on. That'll show her what a mistake she made. Reluctantly, Andy agreed.
Six months later, the lawyer ran into Andy on the street and said, " Your papers are ready." Andy replied, "I intended to call you. I've decide d not to separate from Kim. You wouldn't believe how she has changed since I last saw you." ~ Mark Link, S.J.
