"... make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose." ~ Philippians 2:2
Redwood trees are the giants of the forest. They tower above the earth at h eights of over three hundred feet. Unlike most trees, which send their roo ts to a depth equaling their height, redwoods send their roots outward, i ntermingling their roots with one another. Together they form a fortified u nit, a secure stronghold that allows these giants to withstand high winds.
That is how strength is achieved among men as well, by work ing together as a unified whole. Men working together bring strength, whet her dealing in the workplace, leading families at home, or serving in chu rches. Unfortunately, individualism among men prevails in the church. In f act, the individual approach as produced a generation of isolated men at c hurch. The individualism imitates the independence and surface relationship s among men in American society... We weren't created t...

"Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Go out to face th em tomorrow, and the LORD will be with you." ~ 2 Chronicles 20:17 NIV< br> I've stepped over the line. I am out on the comfort zone. The decision has been made. I am a follower of Jesus Christ. I won't loo k back, let up, slow down or back away. I am finished with low living , small planning, smooth knees, tame visions, chintzy giving and dwarfed goals. I no longer need pre-eminence, prosperity, positions or popula rity. I don't have to be right, first, recognized, praised or rewarded. I now learn by faith, love by patience, lift by prayer and l abor by power. My face is set, my gait is fast. My goal is heaven, my road is rough, my Guide reliable. I cannot be bought, compromised, de toured, lured away, turned back, diluted or delayed. I will not flinc h in the face of adversity, negotiate at the table of the enemy or meander in the maze of mediocrity. I must go on until He comes to get...

"Ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete ." ~ John 16:24
We need not let ourselves think that we cannot d o something useful, or that we never will be able to accomplish a useful t ask. The fact is that we can do anything in the field of human relationship s, if we are willing to call on God's supply of strength. The supply may n ot be immediately available, because we many not be entirely ready to rece ive it, but it will surely come when we are properly prepared for it. As w e grow spiritually, a feeling of being plentifully supplied by God's stren gth will possess us and we will be able to accomplish many useful things. ~ Fr. Pat Umberger
Pray that we may claim God's supply of strength by our faith in Him. Pray that is shall be given to us when we are ready to r eceive it.

"Be faithful to me... and I will give you life as your prize of victory." ~ Revelation 2:10
A neighborhood grocery store is owned by a couple of simple means. Although they don't talk a lot about God , they live in His presence. Their love for each other makes their store a holy place. Customers leave the store feeling more human.... closer to God.
After a long, twelve-hour day, the couple puts things in order for the next day, turns off the lights, and bolts the door. Then th ey go home, have a glass of wine, watch TV, and say their simple prayers to a friendly God or light a candle to the Madonna. Sometimes they play ca rds or reminisce. Then they go to bed. ~ James Kavanaugh, adapted

"For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be. " ~ Matthew 6:20-21
"May Day" was celebrated throughout the Comm unist world as a way of supposedly honoring the role and importance of labo rers in Marxist countries. The Communist conception of work as an end in it self was, of course, very different from the Christian understanding. In 1955, to highlight this difference, Pope Pius XII instituted the feast of St. Joseph the Worker. Joseph, the husband of Mary and the foster-father of Jesus, spent a lifetime laboring as a carpenter. His primary motivation for working wasn't a quest for riches or status, but a desire to s erve God and to care for his family in a loving way. Joseph never worked an y miracles; he never made any important speeches; he wasn't a public figu re, but was known only as a humble carpenter (Matthew 13:55). Joseph labor ed in obscurity, but was nonetheless given an important part in God's plan .
Work is not intended to be an end in itself ...

Every important event in Jesus' l ife found Him in prayer.

"Rather, Blessed are those who hear the word of God and kee p it." ~ Luke 11:28
James is sometimes referred to as St. James "the Lesser," to distinguish him from St. James "the Greater," who was al so an apostle and the brother of St. John, James' brother. St. Jude was al so an apostle, and their mother Mary was a close relative of the Blessed V irgin; for that reason, James was sometimes called the brother (cousin) o f the LORD. But James' holiness came not from being related to Jesus in a b iological way, but in a spiritual one - and this is a relationship Our LOR D offers to every one of His followers.
When Jesus called Philip as an apostle, his first impulse was to share the news with his friend, Nath anael, describing Jesus as "the One of Whom Moses spoke" (John 1:43-49). A t the Last Supper, it was Philip who asked Jesus to show them the Father ( John 14:8-9); he, like the other disciples, was slow to realize the unio n between God the Father and Christ. But Philip's examp...
