"Our Father.... May your will be done on earth as it is in h eaven." ~ Matthew 6:9-10
One night a young man was home alone. H e began thinking about his life. Suddenly, he saw himself as being selfish and self-centered. He was shocked! Next, he turned his thoughts from hims elf to all the suffering people in the world. He began feeling compassion f or them. He knelt down and told his heavenly Father that he wanted to chang e his life. The next morning he awoke, he had a sudden illumination. He wr ote: "I knew that love and service of mankind was the will of God..... W e are to serve God by serving his purpose.... My whole outlook on life chan ged.... It was as if all my life I had been in a darkened room and then I h ad suddenly walked out into the sunlight." ~Alister Hardy, The Spiritua l Man

"(He) will shelter you with his feathers, and under his win gs you will find refuge..." ~ Psalm 91:4
An article in National Geographic several years ago provided a penetrating picture of God's wings. ... After a forest fire in Yellowstone National Park, rangers began their trek up a mountain to assess the inferno's damage. One ranger found a bird literally petrified in ashes, perched statuesquely on the ground at the ba se of a tree. Somewhat sickened by the eerie sight, he knocked over the bi rd with a stick. Three tiny chicks scurried from under their dead mother's wings. The loving mother, keenly aware of impending disaster, had carried her offspring to the base of the tree and had gathered them under her wing s, instinctively knowing that the toxic smoke would rise.
She could have flown to safety but had refused to abandon here babies. When the blaz e had arrived and the heat had scorched her small body, the mother had rem ained steadfast. Because she had been willing to...

"Do you not know that you are God's temple and that God's Sp irit dwells in you?" ~ 1 Corinthians 3:16
We can gently breathe in God's spirit, that spirit which, if not barred out by selfishness, wi ll enable us to do good works. This means rather that God can be enabled to do good works through us. We can become a channel for God's spirit to flow through us and into the lives of others. The works that we can do will onl y be limited by our spiritual development. We can let our spirits be in har mony with God's spirit and there is no limit to what we can do. In the real m of human relationships. ~ Fr. Pat Umberger

"Our love should not be just words and talk; it must be tru e love, which shows itself in action." ~ 1 John 3:18
Gale Sayer s, who played for the Chicago Bears, was one of the greatest running back s of all time. Around his neck he wore a gold medal. On it were inscribed t hree words: "I am Third." Those words became the title of his best-selling autobiography. The book explains the meaning behind the words: "The LORD is first; my friends are second; and I am third." Sayers is the first to admit that he doesn't always live up to the motto. But wearing it aroun d his neck keeps him from straying too far from it. ~ Mark Link S.J.
If our society dealt with issues concerning Life by placing ourselves "thi rd", wouldn't we respect Life in every instance?

"A man's spirit sustains him in infirmity - but a broken spi rit who can bear?" ~ Proverbs 17:14
A soldier who was finally co ming home after having fought in Vietnam, called his parents. "Mom and Dad , I'm coming home, but I've a favor to ask. I have a friend I'd like to b ring home with me." "Sure", they replied, "we'd love to meet him." "There's something you should know." the son continued, "He was hurt prett y badly in the fighting. He stepped on a land mine and lost an arm and a le g. He has nowhere else to go, and I want him to come live with us." "I' m sorry to hear that, son. Maybe we can help him find somewhere to live."< br>"No, I want him to live with us." "Son," said the father, "you don 't know what you're asking. He would be a terrible burden. He'll find a way to live on his own." Their son hung up the phone. They heard nothing more from him until they received word that he had died after falling from a bui lding - suicide. "Mary said, "Behold, I am the handmaid of the LORD. May it be done to me according to your word." Then the angel departed from her." ~ Luke 1:38
Today I saw a water lily growing in a pond. It had the freshest yellow color I'd ever seen. The lily - a precious treasur e - was unconcerned about whether anyone noticed its astounding beauty. As I sat there, watching it unfold its petals noiselessly, I thought of Mary pregnant with Jesus. She, Too was a precious treasure. She, too, was un concerned about whether anyone noticed her astounding beauty. But to those who did, she shared a secret. Her beauty came not from herself, but from the Jesus life within her, unfolding its petals noiselessly. ~ A medita tion on Mary composed by a college student

"And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God." ~ Micah 6:8 NIV
W hen I was in medical school, our professor gave us a pop quiz. I was a con scientious student and had breezed through the questions, until I read the last one: "What is the first name of the woman who cleans our school?"
Surely this was some kind of a joke. I had seen the cleaning woman almo st every day. She was tall, dark-haired and in her 50's, but how would I know her name? I handed in my paper, leaving the last question blank.  ;
Before class ended, one student asked if the last question would count toward our quiz grade. "Absolutely", said the professor. "In your c areers you will meet many people. All are significant. They deserve your at tention and care, even if all you do is smile and say "hello".
I've never forgotten that lesson. I also learned her name was Dorothy. ~ Author unknown
