"Should anyone press you into service for one mile, go with him for two miles. Give to the one who asks of you, and do not turn your back on one who wants to borrow." ~ Matthew 5:41-42

"The righteous man leads a blameless life; blessed are his children after him." ~ Proverbs 20:7
Some years ago a newspaper ran an interesting contest in which children were to write essays on "My Po p's Tops." Here is a young son's top entry:
"We have so much fun wit h my dad that I wisht (sic) I had known him sooner. He is a farmer. He smel ls like a cow, and when I smell that cow in the house, I know Pop is home and I am glad. My pop's tops because every time I ast (sic) for a knickel (sic) he will start preeching (sic) that when he was a boy he had to earn h is knickels (sic), and at the same time he is putting his hand in his pock et and pulls out a knickel (sic) for me. My pop's tops because he was a bra ve soldier. He didn't see me till I was three years old, yet he is just as good to me as if he knew me all my life."
It's evident this little guy was judging his dad by the common everyday things. A smell, a nickle, the feeling inside. Does anything matter mo...

"Let patience have her perfect work." ~ James 1:4
The carpenter hired to restore an old farmhouse had just finished a rough first day on the job. A flat tire made him lose an hour of work, his elect ric saw quit and now his old pickup truck refused to start. While I drove h im home, he sat in stony silence. Upon arriving, he invited me to meet hi s family. As we walked toward the front door, he paused briefly at a small tree, touching the tips of the branches with both hands. When opening the door, he underwent an amazing transformation.
His tanned face was wreathed in smiles and he hugged his two small children and gave his wife a kiss. Afterward he walked me to the car. We passed the tree and m curiosit y got the better of me. I asked him about what I had seen him do earlier. " Oh, that's my trouble tree," he replied. "I know I can't help having trou bles on the job but one thing for sure, troubles don't belong in the house with my wife and children. So I just hang them u...

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patienc e, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control..." ~ Galatians 5:22-23
There was a little boy with a bad temper. His father gave him a bag of nails and told him that every time he lost his tem per, to hammer a nail in the back fence. The first day the boy had driven thirty-seven nails into the fence. Then it gradually dwindled down. He disc overed it was easier to hold his temper than to drive those nails into the fence. Finally, the day came when the boy didn't lose his temper at all. H e told his father about it and the father suggested that the boy now pull o ut one nail for each day that he was able to hold his temper.
The days passed and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone. The father then led him to the fence. He said, " You have done well, my son, but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same. When you say things in anger, ...

"If any one does not provide for his relatives, and especia lly for his own family, he has disowned the faith and is worse than an unb eliever." ~ 1 Timothy 5:8
Christian faith has always been measured (in the Catholic tradition) not by miracles or wonders, but by l ove. Miracles alone do not a saint make. After all, Balaam's Donkey perfor med the wonder of speaking, but the Church never got around to canonizing it. Likewise, Caiaphas, the man who desired the execution of Christ, mad e the true prophecy that it was better for one man to die than for a whole nation to perish, but this hardly guaranteed his sanctity. No, the way th e Church has always determined the measure of a person is by the love they demonstrate. Such love, as always, begins at home. We crawl before we wal k or run. And so, before we try to save the world or be Mother Teresa, we begin by loving the people God has surrounded us with: our mother, father , brother, sister, son, daughter, uncle, aunt. Often, just...

"As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without d eeds is dead." ~ James 2:26
I'll never forget the day I sa w my boy trudging home in the driving rain. Marks' clothing was drenched an d his hair was plastered against his head. I opened the door and he looked up at me with a little smile, his face red from the cold. "Hi, Dad!" he s aid. "You're home early." "Mark, you know, if you'd ride your bike you'd get home faster." He looked at me rather sheepishly, "I know, Dad." I was puzzled. "Well, Son, if you know, why didn't you do it?" Then he hung his head, and I felt like crawling under a table. He had told me several times before that his bike had a flat tire. He could have said that someone promised to help him but never did. But he didn't . What he did say remains printed indelibly on this dad's heart. "I know ho w busy you are, and - I just didn't want to bother you with it again."
I wasn't too busy; just too selfish. A bike...

The Five Finger Prayer
1. Y our thumb is nearest to you. So begin your prayers by praying for those clo sest to you. To pray for our loved ones is, as C.S. Lewis once said, a "s weet duty." 2. The next finger is the pointing finger. Pray for those wh o teach, instruct and heal. This includes, priests, doctors, teachers a nd coaches. They need God's guidance. 3. The next finger is the tallest finger. It reminds us of those people who shape our nation and guide public opinion. They need God's wisdom. 4. The next finger is our ring finger. This is our weakest finger; as any piano teacher will testify. Pray for t hose who are weak, in trouble or in pain. You cannot pray too much for the m. 5. And lastly, comes our little finger; the smallest finger of all. Which is where we should place ourselves in relation to God and oth ers. As the Bible says, "the least shall be the grea...
