Jane Goodall is an expert on wildlife and conserv ation. She has lectured at Yale University and written for the New York Times. In a moment of candor, she confessed:
"When I left home and faced the realities of the world, I put my thoughts of God in cold sto rage for a while, because I couldn't reconcile what I believed, deep insi de, with what was going on around me. But that early period when God was a s real as the wind... left me an inner peace, which as I grew older, swel led - until, perforce, I had to pen my mind to God again." ~ Mark Link, S.J.

"Train a child in the way he should go, and when his is old , he will not turn from it." ~ Proverbs 22:6
According to a rec ent radio report, a middle school in Oregon was faced with a unique proble m. A number of girls were beginning to use lipstick and would put it on in the bathroom. That was fine, but then they were pressing their lips to the mirrors leaving dozens of little lip prints. Finally the principal decided that something had to be done. She called all the girls to the bathroom an d met them there with the custodian.
She explained that all t hese lip prints were causing a major problem for the custodian who had to c lean the mirrors every day. To demonstrate how difficult it was to maintain the mirrors, she asked the custodian to clean one of the mirrors. He took out a long-handled brush, dipped it into the toilet and scrubbed the mirr or. Since then there have been no lip prints on the school's mirrors. ~ Aut hor unknown

Th e guest shouted, "Auntie, come up and do something." Everyone applauded.< br> She recited the same psalm. When she finished, there wasn't a dry e ye in the room. Later, the guest asked the actor, "Your rendition was fab ulous. So why were we so moved by the aunt?" He replied, "Simple - I know the psalm, but old auntie knows the Shepherd." ~ Mark Link, S.J.

"You see that a person is justified by what he does and not by faith alone." ~ James 2:24
The founder of the Benedictine Ord er, St. Benedict came from a distinguished Italian family (his sister was St. Scholastica). He studied in Rome, but disturbed by the city's sinful a nd chaotic nature, he chose to live as a hermit at the age of twenty. Soon afterwards some monks asked Benedict to be their leader; though this init ial experiment failed (as the monks were upset by Benedict's high standards , and even tried to poison him), the saint was enthusiastic over the idea of monasticism: monks living together in a community, combining contempla tion, work, and shared prayer. The Benedictine Rule emphasizes ora et labora ("prayer and works"). The saint performed many miracles, and when he died, he was buried in the same grave as his sister. H e could never have imagined the monasteries established under his influence played a vital role in preserving Western culture du...

The film, Chariots of Fire, is about Eric Liddel l, a Scott, and Britain''s top 100-meter runner and a cinch to win the go ld in the 1924 Paris Olympics. Deeply religious, Liddell never ran on Sund ay.
When the Olympic schedule was released, he was shocked. The 100-meter event was scheduled for Sunday. In spite of the incredible pr essure put upon him by the British press, Eric refused to compete. He swit ched to the 400-meter race, a race he had never run in his life.
Just before the race, an American runner, Jackson Scholz, handed Li ddell a note. It contained this sentence from John 12:26: "My Father will h onor anyone who serves me." Seconds later, Eric won the 400 meter-meter ev ent. Still clutched in his hand was the note Jackson Scholz had given him. ~ Mark Link, S.J.

Functioning on a material plane alone can take us a way from God. We can also try to function on a spiritual plane. Functioning on a spiritual plane as well as on a material plane can make life what it should be. All material activities are valueless in themselves alone. But a ll activities, seemingly trivial or of seemingly great moment, are all al ike if directed by God's guidance.
