"Forgive your brother from the heart." ~ Matthew 18:35 In the film, All Quiet Along the Western Front, a Germ an soldier is in a foxhole, taking cover from artillery fire. Suddenly, a n enemy French soldier leaps into the same hole to take cover as well. The German leaps on him and stabs him. But the Frenchman doesn't die immediatel y.
The German - hardly more than a boy - studies the French soldier' s dying eyes. Moved to pity, he makes him comfortable and gives him drink. When he dies, the German soldier feels great remorse. He speaks to the de ad Frenchman, saying: "When you jumped in here, you were my enemy - an d I was afraid.... But you're just a man like me... If we threw away these rifles and these uniforms, you could be my brother.... You have to forgive me." ~ Mark Link, S.J.

"Every husband must love his wife as himself." ~ Ephesia ns 5:33
Andy was married to a girl named Kim, and things weren't go ing well. He consulted a lawyer who had known him since he was a boy. After explaining the problem, he asked the lawyer to prepare separation papers. The lawyer peered over his glasses at Andy, whom he knew better than Andy thought.
He advised Andy to wait six months. In the meantime, he s hould call her from work on occasion, bring home small gifts, and take he r to dinner on special days. Then go through with the separati on. That'll show her what a mistake she made. Reluctantly, Andy agreed.
Six months later, the lawyer ran into Andy on the street and said, " Your papers are ready." Andy replied, "I intended to call you. I've decide d not to separate from Kim. You wouldn't believe how she has changed since I last saw you." ~ Mark Link, S.J.

General Douglas MacArthur led the Allies to v ictory over Japan in World War II. He once said, "By profession I am a sol dier and I take pride in that fact. "Humble yourselves before the LORD, and he will lift you up ." ~ James 4:10
General Washington carried with him, in his fie ld notebook, twenty-four pages of personal prayers he had handwritten. The following is his prayer for the United States of America:
"Almighty God, we make our earnest prayer that Thou wilt keep the United States in Thy Holy protection; and Thou wilt incline the hearts of the citizens to c ultivate a spirit of brotherly affection and love for one another, particu larly for their brethren who have served in the field. And finally that Tho u wilt most graciously be pleased to dispose us all to do justice, to love mercy, and to demean ourselves with that charity, humility, and pacific temper of mind which were the characteristics of the Divine Author of our blessed religion, and without a humble imitation of whose example in these things we can never hope to be a happy nation. Grant our supplication, we beseech Thee, through Jesus Christ our LORD. Amen."

"When you help a needy person, o it in such a way tat even your closest friend will not know about it." ~ Matthew 6:3-4 < br>The New York Times ran an amazing story. St. Jude's Childre n's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, get hundreds of donations - large and small - daily. One day they received a plain envelope with no ret urn address. Inside was a McDonald's Monopoly Sweepstake's ticket for a $1 million "Instant Winner."
St. Jude's called McDonald's. Officials ca me with a representative of the Arthur Anderson accounting firm. After chec king the board with a jeweler's eyepiece, he declared it a winner. McDonal d's and St. Jude officials agreed to respect the donor's apparent desire to remain anonymous. They made no effort to find out who it was. ~ Mark Link , S.J.

"You are like light for the whole world.... Your light must shine before people."~ Matthew 5:14, 16
A teacher asked her stu dents, "What if an incredible explosion destroyed all life on earth except for those of us in this classroom? Where would the Church be? They thought a minute. Then a boy said, "It would be in this room. We would be the Chu rch."
This story makes an important point. The Church is not a place where people gather. It is the people who gather. To have Church we must g ather. It's like the bread that we use for the Eucharist. Hundreds of grain s of wheat must be gathered to make it. In a similar way, only by gatherin g do we make the risen Christ visible in today's world.
Jesus assured us, "Where two or three come together in my name, I am there wit h them." ~ Mark Link, S.J.
