I go for long walks in the woods a lot, and I ask myself if I'm handling (all this success) the way it ought to be handled. I don't know wh y it happened to me. God has a purpose for it. We are able to contribute an awful lot of money to His work, and maybe that's why. But I firmly believ e it will be over one of these days - five years from now, ten years from now. The books will stop selling for whatever reason. All of this is tempor ary... One of my best friends in college called me one day and told me that he had terminal cancer. I couldn't believe it. A teacher told her class, "When I was a girl , my grandma gave me a big cucumber inside a bottle with a narrow neck. She said she'd tell me a 'big secret' when I figured out how she got it into t he bottle. One day I was walking in Grandma's garden, and I saw a bottle i nto which she had inserted a vine with a tiny cucumber on it. Now I knew ho w she got the cucumber in the bottle; she grew it there.

The n Grandma told me her 'big secret'. She said a 'good habit' formed in child hood is like a tiny cucumber inserted in a bottle - or like a tiny bit of y east inserted in dough. The habit grows so big and strong inside you that n o one can take it away from you. ~ Mark Link, S.J.

Psychologist Julius Segal worked with the 52 Americans held captive by Iran for 444 days in the early 1980s. He listed four reasons why some of them n ot only survived the ordeal but also grew stronger as a result of it.

First, They resisted the temptation to withdraw into themselves. Second, they helped other captives. Shifting attention from their own woes and reaching out to help others had a remarkable healing effect on them. T hird, they dept control of their lives. One captive invited his guards to sit down each time they entered his room. "This was my space, " he said. " They were m guests." This tiny gesture helped him stay in control and resis t becoming a passive victim. Lastly, they learned to tap inner powers thro ugh prayer and meditation. ~ Mark Link, S.J.

A lthough Henri Matisse was nearly 28 years younger than Auguste Renoir, the two great artists were dear friends and frequent companions. When Renoir w as confined to his home during the last decade of his life, Matisse visite d him daily. Renoir, almost paralyzed by arthritis, continued to paint in spite of his infirmities.

One day as Matisse watched the eld er painter working in his studio, fighting torturous pain, with each brus h stroke, he blurted out:

"Auguste, why do you continue to paint when you are in such agony?" Renoir answered simply: "The beauty rema ins; the pain passes."

And so, almost to his dying day, Renoir pu t paint to canvas. One of his most famous paintings, The Bathers, was completed just two years before his passing, 14 years after this disab ling disease struck him. ~ Mark Link, S.J.

A second-century story concerns a king who tried to get an influential sub ject to denounce Jesus. The king said, "If you don't reject your Jesus, I will be forced to banish you." The subject replied, "My dear king, you c an't banish me from Jesus. He remains with his followers forever."

T he king showed irritation and said, "If you don't denounce this Jesus, I' ll seize everything you treasure." The subject said, "The only thing I tru ly treasure is stored in heaven. There's no way you can seize it". The king erupted and shouted, "You leave me no choice but to kill you." The subjec t said, "My dear king, I am already dead.
