CHARITY is choosing the best man

Abraham Lincoln succeeded James Buchanan as president in 1861. Ed Stanton , a member of Buchanan's cabinet, disdained and ridiculed Lincoln. A year into the presidency, Lincoln had to replace his Secretary of War. He chose Stanton, explaining, "I know the terrible things he said about me. But h e's the best man for the job."

Shortly thereafter, Lee surrendered to Grant, and Lincoln was assassinated. One of the first public officials to reach Lincoln's side was Stanton. When Lincoln breathed his last, Stant on said with heartfelt sincerity, "There lays the world's greatest ruler. Now he belongs to the ages." ~ Mark Link, S.J.
