Description | "Any country that divides itself into groups which fight eac h other will not last very long: a family divided against itself falls apar t." ~ Luke 11:17 Abraham Lincoln delivered his famous "Divided H ouse Speech" at the Illinois State Convention in Springfield in 1858. Befor e doing so, he read it to several friends. One said it was ahead of its ti me. Another called it a fool utterance. A third predicted that it would dri ve away as many voters who had just come over to the Republican party. A fo urth did not agree fully with it, but said, "Deliver that speech as read and it will make you President." Lincoln did and the rest is history. ~ Mar k Link, S.J.
