In no other struggle of this country have so many died and suffered. It was nearing its end when Ab raham Lincoln gave his second inaugural address on March 4, 1865. The conc luding paragraph of his address set the tone for recovery from the war: "With malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the wor k we are in, to bind up the nations' wounds, to care for him who shall ha ve borne the battle and for his widow and his orphan, to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves and with all n ations."
