In 1531, Mexican Aztecs had a death wish. Their entire civilization had b een destroyed by the Spaniards and many were forced to choose between bapti sm or death. A poor Indian named Juan Diego was walking to Mass when he hea rd his name called. He saw the Virgin Mary dressed in clothing symbolic to the Aztecs, including a brown rope tied around her waist, which symbolize d pregnancy. Her skin was dark like his own and she spoke his language. She comforted Diego and asked him to visit the Bishop of Mexico. He was to tel l the bishop her name was Santa Maria de Coatlallope and that she wanted a church built on the mountain. The bishop didn't believe Diego, but Our Lad y appeared to Diego again and sent him back to the bishop with a sign.
