PATRIOTISM is not a call to arms, but a call to peace

Whenever I think of my past, I cannot help but think of the mystery of my survival. Why was I sti ll alive, when men all around me had died like flies in four years of conf lict? I came to feel ashamed of my former godless idea that mans' own abili ty were his only trustworthy guides. In my early life, religion had little place in my thinking. In the Navy, the former "War Catechism" became the sum total of my ideology...

In an editorial column, I came across t his calling: "Oh people of Japan, if there is any one of you who has not y et read the Bible, please read the first thirty pages with an open mind. S urely there is something there that will touch your heart." For  me, this was a voice from Heaven. I came to the Gospel of Luke where I faced t he scene of the crucifixion of Christ. "Father, for give them for they kno w not what they do." Jesus prayed for the very soldie...
