UNITY is celebrating the Eucharist - at all costs

A religious persecution in 1980 left a region of Guatemala without priests. But the people continued to meet in t heir churches. Once a month they sent delegates to a part of Guatemala wher e priests still functioned. 

Traveling up to eighteen hours on foot, the delegates put a basket of bread on the altar and celebrated the Eucharist in the name of their parish. After the Mass, they took the brea d home. Now it was the Body of Christ. When the government threatened to cl ose all churches, the people said, "If the authorities forbid us to meet in the churches, we shall gather under the trees of the woods or in the ca ves of the mountains." ~ Fernando Bermudez, Death and Resurrection in G uatemala
