An editori al began: "A priest we know recently described his experience of being conf ronted by a beggar while eating at a fast-food restaurant. The beggar said he was hungry, and the priest, intimidated and nervous, could only say, "I;m sorry," and look the other way.

Later, as the priest recoun ted the story, he was praying Psalm 80, "LORD, let me see your face," w hen the image of the beggar came to mind.

How many times have you se en the LORD and not recognized him?...

A platoon of U.S. troops was d riven back and one of their infantrymen was wounded by gunfire. As he lay o n the battlefield, a friend asked his sergeant in the foxhole, "Can I go get 'im?" "There's no use. He's probably dead," the sergeant answered. "An d even if he isn't dead, you'd never make it back alive. But if you want t o...."

Those last few words were all the friend needed to hear. Craw ling on elbows and knees he reached the bleeding infantryman, hoisted him to his shoulders, and hobbled back. As he neared the foxhole, the heroic friend was hit in the chest with a bullet and the two friends collapsed in a heap. The sergeant tried to find the pulse of the infantryman and there w as none. Dead.
Then he told the soldier, "I told you it would be sensel ess. Your friend is dead, and now you've been shot."

Father Joseph Hogan was a chaplain in Europe with the U.S. Third Army. One Sunday, he f elt the presence of God in a way that touched him deeply. The wrote:
"I was saying Mass on top of a jeep. The men were standing there with their gu ns slung over their backs and their helmets on. The ack-ack was pecking at the planes upstairs. There was a torrent of rain coming down and a sea of m ud to wallow in. So I said, 'Don't bother to kneel down.' And they didn't , until the Consecration. Then every man went down on his knees....
